Is Vladimir Putin planning a nuclear detonation in space to cripple U.S. satellite networks, causing growing worry in Washington? The scenario under discussion involves a possible Russian space-based nuclear capability that could threaten satellite constellations, including SpaceX’s Starlink network, which has supported Ukraine’s communications in the war. A U.S. simulation found that a hypothetical nuclear detonation at roughly 400 kilometres above Earth could create radiation effects capable of disabling as many as 11,000 satellites within one week. The reported scenario raises concerns that Donald Trump and Elon Musk could face serious strategic consequences because of U.S. support for Ukraine and Starlink’s role in maintaining Ukrainian connectivity.
