Rubio changes tune, unveils Trump's military plan for Greenland? Not purchase, US to annexe island?

Published on Jan 08, 2026 12:19 pm IST

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has confirmed that Washington is in talks with Venezuela’s state oil company PDVSA to secure between 30 and 50 million barrels of Venezuelan oil, following the U.S. military operation that led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. Rubio said the oil would be sold at market rates, with the U.S. retaining control over how the revenue is spent, claiming it would benefit the Venezuelan people. He described the move as part of a broader U.S. strategy to stabilise Venezuela, increase leverage over interim authorities, and open the country to American and Western energy companies, moves that have triggered widespread international condemnation.
