Somaliland: Heated debate at UNSC - Russia, China corner USA, Israel over Africa move| Somalia
Published on Dec 30, 2025 01:32 pm IST
Somalia and several UN member states strongly condemned Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland as an independent state during an emergency session at the United Nations. Somali officials described the move as a direct violation of Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and international law, warning it could destabilise the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. Representatives from the African Union, Arab League, China, Russia, Turkey, Egypt, South Africa, and others echoed Somalia’s rejection, calling the recognition null and void. Israel defended its decision by citing Somaliland’s historical sovereignty, governance record, and legal criteria for statehood, while the United States clarified that it has made no change in its policy regarding Somaliland. The issue has sparked widespread regional and international backlash, highlighting deep divisions within the UN over recognition, sovereignty, and regional stability.
