U.S. President Donald Trump approved a covert mission to capture Nicolás Maduro several days before large-scale U.S. strikes hit Caracas, with the CIA tracking his movements and Delta Force executing the snatch operation inside Venezuela, CNN reported. Senator Mike Lee says he was told Maduro has been arrested to stand trial on criminal charges in the U.S., that the “kinetic action” in Caracas was to protect U.S. personnel carrying out the arrest, and that the strikes fall under the president’s inherent Article II war powers, even as Maduro’s exact current location remains unclear.
