US President Donald Trump has escalated tensions with Colombia by warning that President Gustavo Petro “has to watch” himself over cocaine trafficking and suggesting that Colombia could be a target for U.S. military action, deepening regional strains already heightened by the Venezuela standoff. Petro has hit back fiercely, warning Washington not to “awaken the jaguar” and saying that any strike on Colombian territory over drugs would amount to a declaration of war and an attack on national sovereignty.
