Venezuelan congressman Nicolás Maduro Guerra and other family members delivered a letter to U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk demanding the immediate release of President Nicolás Maduro Moros and First Lady Cilia Flores, who were captured by U.S. forces during a military operation on January 3. They accused the U.S. of violating international law and the personal immunity of heads of state, calling for a public U.N. condemnation, rejection of the alleged rights violations, and pressure on Washington to free the couple. Both Maduro and Flores have pleaded not guilty in a U.S. federal court to criminal charges stemming from the operation.
