The European Union is increasingly fractured over a controversial plan to use over $200 billion in frozen Russian assets, primarily held in Belgium, to fund Ukraine’s war effort. Belgium has now joined other skeptical EU members in raising sharp objections, with both its Defense Minister and Prime Minister warning that using the funds could prolong the war, lead to severe Russian retaliation, and impose unacceptable financial risks on Belgium itself.
