A mistrial is declared when a judge halts a trial prior to reaching a verdict due to a significant error that could unfairly impact the defendant, rendering a just decision unattainable. In this case, no mistrial has been declared.

There were speculations that the judge might contemplate a mistrial after prosecutor Shanan Buckingham questioned Clancy’s former mother-in-law, who is a member of the Catholic faith, about her awareness of whether murder is regarded as a "mortal sin."

Clancy, 36, has entered a plea of not guilty to three charges of murder and three charges of assault and battery related to the strangulation deaths of her children — Cora, Dawson, and Callan — which occurred in January 2023 in the basement of their residence in Duxbury, Massachusetts.

Following the incident, she leaped from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Clancy has not contested the fact that she killed the children.
