Patrick went on to find their kids in the basement, strangled with resistance bands. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Patrick joined a sailing club, signed up to run in the Boston Marathon on behalf of a children's medical charity, and started to volunteer as a guide for blind runners, as per a New Yorker article on him.

Her father reportedly suggested he call, saying Lindsay was in ‘tough shape and going downhill’.
