The brush fire occurred at approximately 1:57 p.m. near Olowalu Village, with emergency sirens sounding around 2:40 p.m., according to officials, as per reports.
Honoapi‘ilani Highway closed
Honoapi‘ilani Highway has been closed from North Kihei to Olowalu Store at 820 Olowalu Village Road in Lahaina, as first responders work at the scene.
Authorities are asking the public to avoid the area and stay clear of the emergency response zone so firefighters and other first responders can carry out their work.
The county has opened temporary evacuation points at Lahaina Civic Center and South Maui Community Park Gym in Kīhei for people displaced by the evacuation order.
