The ruling Congress in Uttarakhand was in a tizzy after Shaila Rani Rawat, Congress MLA from Kedarnath, was named in an FIR filed in Rudraprayag district on Monday evening for instigating Om Prakash Uniyal, a disaster-victim to commit suicide. Radha Uniyal, wife of the deceased filed the complaint against the Congress MLA and nine others under IPC 306 for abetment of suicide.
Hotelier Om Prakash Uniyal had committed suicide on September 19. In his suicide note, he reportedly named Congress MLA Shaila Rani Rawat and a few other persons. Uniyal had incurred huge losses in last year's floods in the Kedar valley.
Uniyal used to run a hotel in Guptkashi, en route to Kedarnath. As per his suicide note, he had given a certain amount of money as loan to the Congress MLA and others, which he had failed to recover. The suicide note also mentioned that the compensation amount meant for disaster victims was distributed unevenly.
Wife of the deceased said there was a delay in filing the FIR as she was in a state of shock after her husband's death. She alleged that the Congress MLA was threatening them.
Police has said they are investigating the case and will act accordingly.
"Ten persons have been named in the FIR. We will interrogate them if necessary," Swatantra Kumar, (in-charge) superintendent police, Rudraprayag told HT on Wednesday.
On the other hand, the MLA claimed she has nothing to do with Uniyal's suicide and was being made a political scapegoat. Talking to HT on the phone on Wednesday, Shaila Rani said she is ready to face any probe.
"I belong to the Congress and deceased was associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). I had known him for the last couple of months. I don't know why he (Uniyal) named me though I feel it could be an attempt by BJP to end my career," she said. The MLA claimed the government has disbursed `100 crore till date as compensation to disaster-affected people.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Prakash Pant demanded a CBI probe into the incident.
