NEW DELHI: A man, who claimed to be upset with Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia’s foreign tours while the city was dealing with a health crisis, attacked the minister with ink outside lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung’s office.

The attacker, identified as Brijesh Shukla from Karawal Nagar in north-east Delhi, threw ink at Sisodia’s arms and forehead, when he was about to get into his car after talking to the media following his meeting with Jung.

The attacker was detained by the police immediately. “We arrested Shukla after receiving an official complaint against him from the personal secretary of the deputy CM, following which a case was registered under sections of obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions, assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace,” Madhur Verma, DCP north, said.

Speaking to reporters before being whisked away by police, Shukla said he was angry with Sisodia for visiting Finland on “public money” at a time when the city was grappling with chikungunya and dengue crisis.

Sisodia termed the ink attack to be a reflection of the “dirty politics of Congress and BJP”. “Delhi government is committed to working on health and education. But the Congress and BJP are working on ink. Their aim is to stop our initiatives,” he added.

He also challenged the BJPruled civic bodies to clear the “filth across the city” and hit out at Congress for “ruining” the city’s education and health sector . “This is merely a diversionary tactic adopted by them since we are focusing on development,” he added.

Dilip Pandey, convenor of Delhi unit of AAP, tweeted, “Well done L-G Saheb. After putting the ACB, CBI and police (behind AAP leaders), now you have also started getting people to throw ink. However, we know to make the best use of ink.”
