NEW DELHI: Opposition Congress launched a scathing attack on the BJP-ruled South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Monday for allegedly not acting in time to control the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.
In the House meeting, leader of Opposition, SDMC, Farhad Suri, accused the civic agency of delaying fogging and other preventive measures.
“SDMC claims of having started fogging in the month of July. Most of the ward councillors have told me that no fogging was done in my area even in August,” he said.
He also accused the corporation of delaying the launch of the Terminator train, a special train that sprays repellent and insecticides along the Ring Railway route.
HT on Sunday reported that despite repeated requests from Northern Railways, the SDMC said it wouldn’t start train before September 23.
The Congress corporators also accused the agency of failing to put a check on alleged rampant unauthorised construction in south Delhi.
“The construction sites are the biggest breeding grounds as water remains stagnant here for days,” he said.
The two-hour House meeting of the corporation mostly revolved around the issue of dengue and chikungunya.
Cases of the disease have mounted to over 2,600 in Delhi with 1,568 of them being recorded in the last one week.
According to a municipal report released on Monday, 2,625 chikungunya cases have been recorded in the national capital till September 17, marking a massive rise of nearly 150% from the previous count.
SDMC mayor, Shyam Sharma, said allegations of no fogging done in July were false. “I have substantial proof that fogging was started even before the month of July, which I will put in public domain soon.”
Sharma said that challans are regularly issued to defaulters at construction sites and the drive will be intensified in future.
