‘UGC relents’ but teachers to continue their boycott

NEW DELHI: The Delhi University administration on Wednesday asked the striking teachers to end their protest and start evaluation of papers.
The Delhi University Teachers’ Association, however, said they would continue their boycott of evaluation and would not take part in the admission process and staff council committees.
The staff council committees perform several administrative work.
The teachers said they would continue with their evaluation boycott as they did not have any written assurance from the University Grants Commission (UGC) on the third amendment regulation.
On Wednesday, meetings were held at the UGC to discuss the issues raised by teachers. According to teachers, the commission had agreed to reduce their workload but remained mum on API.
“We have come to know that the UGC has agreed to some of our demands. However since the commission has not rolled back AP I, we teachers will continue our fight,” said AK Bhagi, DU executive council member.
The teachers are protesting against a UGC notification, which they say will bring down the number of teaching positions by 50% with ‘unreasonable’ terms of promotion.
The new notification increases the workload for assistant professors from 16 hours per week to 22 hours per week (including tutorials). The work hours of associate professors will go up from 14 to 20 hours.
