For her second appearance at the Cannes Film Festival (the first was in 2010), Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone went for a plum-hued dress by label Marchesa and she decided to romance risqué in sheer tulle.
The label in the past has been favoured by many Bollywood celebrities including Shraddha Kapoor, Sridevi, Parineeti Chopra and Aditi Rao Hydari. Its co-founder, Georgina Chapman, visited Mumbai in April to attend a charity event, and, she later took out time to mingle with the some stars too. Celebrity stylist Elizabeth Saltzman, who has also styled Hollywood stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Uma Thurman, is behind Deepika’s look. While international media was mostly mum on Deepika, back home, she created a buzz. “Love her look. The colour is unusual but suits her well. She has the body to wear something cutting-edge, just like this dress. Also, she looks relaxed and comfortable, which is the most important,” says designer Ritu Beri.
“The look is hard to fault — the sheer, fluid style is very ‘now’,” says, designer Rina Dhaka, adding that a softer blush tone would have worked even better.
“She is a rage! Put her in a rag and she’d still look like a million bucks. But for me, while the jewels and the gown work, the makeup was pretty underwhelming,” says designer Anand Bhushan.
For Suneet Varma, the colour wasn’t a winner. “Her hair and makeup is always on point, but, I’m not a big fan of the dress — it’s too muted. She looks far better in vibrant, brighter jewel tones. However, the sheer and leg show is sexy and works at Cannes.”
