Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons is on track to make a move from TV to develop his career as a big-screen actor. In the wake of Hidden Figures, he is set to take on the lead role in Brother Orange, a film adapted from a true story which led to a strange friendship between an American and a Chinese man.

In 2014, Matt Stopera had his iPhone stolen in a New York bar. Convinced that it was lost forever, he simply bought another. However, a year later he and friends noticed a number of mysterious selfies taken by a stranger who liked to pose next to orange trees, which appeared in his iCloud feed.

At that point he came to the conclusion that his phone had been taken overseas and sold in China by a thief, who had not bothered to deactivate its iCloud data storage service. Amused by this quirky story, Matt, who was a senior editor at media website BuzzFeed, decided to write it up. Much to his surprise, his article went viral and was read by millions of Chinese internet users, who decided to track down the phone’s new owner. Located by his fellow citizens, the man whom Stopera dubbed Brother Orange welcomed the American into his home, and thereafter they became friends.

Jim Parsons will play the part of Matt Stopera in the forthcoming film which is currently being developed by Warner Bros. For the first time in his career, the actor who is best known for his role as Sheldon Cooper in the series The Big Bang Theory, which launched in 2007, will play the leading role in a full-length feature. However, this is not his first appearance on the big screen. The winner of four Emmy Awards has already worked on two films directed by Zach Braff, Garden State and Wish I Was Here, and also on the Muppets(2012) and the horror film Visions. His latest film Hidden Figures, a behind-the-scenes story about NASA in the 1960s in which Parsons plays alongside Taraji P Henson, Octavia Spencer and Kevin Costner, is scheduled for release on December 25 in the United States.

With a flourishing career on the big screen, it is not certain that Parsons will continue to work in television. Some have already predicted that he will shortly be leaving The Big Bang Theory, whose tenth season is currently airing on CBS. However, this is far from a foregone conclusion, especially when you consider that Jim Parsons, who is the best paid television actor in the US, draws a salary of $1 million for every episode of the show. According to the latest news, the actor has agreed to take part in an 11th season of the series which has yet to be confirmed by CBS.
