The Tripura police have started investigation into a fake Facebook account opened in the name of chief minister Manik Sarkar. This is the second time that the state police have registered a case after a similar incident in 2014.
Interestingly, the chief minister has clarified that he does not have any Facebook or email account, official or otherwise; nor has he permitted anyone to create any social media profile in his name.
Sarkar’s fake Facebook page has several posts that talk about development work done by the CPI(M) for the landless poor.
While the bogus account claims to have 131 “friends”, one particular post titled “Future PM India – Manik Sarkar” attracted 969 ‘Likes’.
“The Police’s Cyber Crime Branch is probing the matter and hope to make a breakthrough soon,” said a senior police official.
In 2014, the state police had registered a suo motu case after learning about a similar fake facebook account in the name of the CM.
