A government primary school teacher in Rajasthan was suspended for distributing literature on self-styled godman Asaram and promoting his teachings among school students in Dholader village, 40 km from Barmer.
The suspension, ordered by the district education office following complaints from a group of the villagers on Friday, triggered protests by another group of the villagers on Saturday.
The protesters locked the school and protested against the suspension of the teacher, Magaram Ghat. Ghat has been directed to report at a school, 80 km away from the district headquarter, during his suspension period.
Giving information about the incident, additional district education officer Dungardas Khinchi said a group of villagers had recently complained against the teacher alleging that he was distributing literature related to Asaram, imparting his teachings to the students and forcing them to bow before Asaram’s portrait.
Following their complaints to the district incharge education secretary Kunjilal Meena and secretary education, an enquiry was ordered into the matter and the teacher was suspended on Friday.
However, on Saturday morning, another group of villagers reached the school, locked its gates and protested against the teacher’s suspension.
Khinchi said that the protesters claimed that the teacher used to preach Asaram’s lesson to the students earlier, but he had stopped doing so after a warning. Citing that the teacher was sincere towards the students, the protesters demanded that his suspension be revoked. “We have explained to the villagers and assured them to investigate the matter fairly and take action accordingly,” he added.
Asaram is lodged in a Jodhpur jail since August 2013 in connection with separate cases of rape and sexual misconduct.
