Higher Education minister Rajesh Tope, on Friday, announced that the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, has been granted elite status. The development puts the ICT, Mumbai in line with engineering institutes like the Indian Institute of Technology.
The special status, which is given by the All India Council for Technical Education, will now make the ICT eligible for special grants from the Ministry of Human Resource Department, in addition to grants from the state government. “This will enable the institute to improve its infrastructure and other facilities which are available to high-end institutes,” Tope said.
A 2011 annual survey on the research standards of engineering and technology institutes conducted by the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, ranked the ICT as number one in India and number four in the world.
