Rekha Rani, who till a week ago was just a regular worker with a food joint in Chandigarh’s Elante Mall, was motivated by her father Bansi Lal to participate in panchayat polls elections.
Interestingly, Rani was not even eligible to contest these elections when they were announced as she wasn’t of the eligible age - 21. But, an amendment in Haryana Panchayati Raj Act that made educational qualifications mandatory helped her to fulfill her dream by delaying the elections and giving her the time to reach the eligible age.
The new sarpanch a Chaplamori village defeated her rival Nirmal Rani by 220 votes. The young sapranch wants to focus on providing a quality life to people of her village.
