College authorities of Lajpat Rai DAV College, Jagraon, have decided to scrap the controversial biometric attendance system for Dalit students. However, the students were far from satisfied as they staged a protest against authoritieson Tuesday.
The students raised slogans against college authorities and demanded the administration to lodge a complaint against the college principal. The students further demanded a written apology from the college principal.
Karamjit Singh Kotakpura, state finance secretary, Punjab Students Union, said, “General category students mark their attendance in registers. The authorities have adopted a modern way of untouchability and students were forced to do this for a week.”
A letter issued on December 24, 2015, by Sarita Chopra, assistant director (scholarship), instructed colleges to introduce biometric system in educational institutions to ensure attendance and give benefits
of scholarship to eligible students. She further directed the college to install biometric system for all students who have taken admission in separate courses.
College principal Karan Sharma, said, “The students who are protesting outside are not from our college. We have just implemented the DPI’s instructions that say SC students must mark attendance through biometric machine to avail scholarship benefits.”
The installation of a separate biometric machine for SC/BC students outside the Lajpat Rai DAV College, Jagraon, office had triggered the controversy in the institution.
