A five-month-old calf was born to parents Chawang and Sri Nandong on May 12 this year. She is the first Asian elephant born at the Night Safari in six years. After capturing hearts through her playful videos posted on social media, the baby elephant has just been given a name: “Neha”, which means “love” in Hindi. Neha has been gaining an expected 1-2 kgs daily since her birth. At 352 kgs, she now weighs more than double her birth weight. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed Asian elephants as endangered on its Red List of Threatened Species, with an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 left in the wild today.
