Hundreds of newly elected legislators began a parliament session that will install Myanmar's first democratically elected government in more than 50 years. Aung San Suu Kyi's party, the National League for Democracy (NLD) won 80 percent of the elected seats in general elections in November last year for the upper and lower houses, qualifying it to form a government. The session marks a historic turnaround for the NLD, which for years was suppressed by the military. The country started moving from a half-century of dictatorship toward democracy in 2011.
