The undisputed queen of toy box chic is set to star in her own exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France, from March 10 to September 18, 2016, looking at the many aspects of Barbie’s life as a toy and as a socio-cultural icon.

The French museum will be setting aside 1,500 square meters for its tribute to the world-famous Mattel toy, telling the story of Barbie and her many lives through 700 dolls, as well as contemporary works of art, newspaper articles, photos, videos and other documents.

The exhibition has two dimensions, first of all considering Barbie’s role as a child’s toy, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look into the world of this much-loved doll. Alongside that, the exhibition focuses on a more grown-up aspect of Barbie’s persona, as an object of sociological and historical significance.

Drawing on in-house archives from Barbie’s maker, Mattel, the exhibition explores how the star doll embodies the “American way of life,” evolving in step with modern comforts. As well as being seen to personify female stereotypes, the legendary Barbara Millicent Roberts -- aka Barbie -- has gone on to become a vet, a paleontologist, an IT developer, a racing driver and a police officer. In fact, Barbie has had over 150 different jobs over the course of her career.

The exhibition looks at Barbie’s role as a pint-sized fashion icon too, with models and drawings showing how her hairstyles and clothing were developed in line with the latest trends. Fashion fans can get an up-close look at key pieces from her wardrobe, including ensembles designed by Christian Lacroix, Agnès B, Christian Louboutin and Thierry Mugler.

The exhibition also features works of art inspired by Barbie, such as a portrait by Andy Warhol.
