My art tries to sensitise people: Israeli artist in Delhi

Israeli artist David Schocken is a multi-faceted talent like few others. With his ongoing exhibition in the Capital, he showcases how he dabbles with photographs, videos and different artworks with equal ease.

Israeli artist David Schocken is a multi-faceted talent like few others. With his ongoing exhibition in the Capital, he showcases how he dabbles with photographs, videos and different artworks with equal ease.

Once a student of man and communication design, Schocken is quite an intense composer. Through his work, he displays everyday issues that bother him – be it wrongdoings of governments, problems in people’s relations or impact of globalisation.

“My work – installations, photography, videography and paintings, are a medium to sensitize people all around the globe towards these issues in a non-bookish manner,” he says. Schocken says he started making installations because of their fragile nature. Curator of the event, Chana Anzi, says, “All the installations and videos are a brilliant proof of the artist’s versatility.”

Some masterpieces in the exhibition include an installation made of a porcelain teapot, a projection of a filmed management meeting with the participant’s faces all blurred, and anonymous people on escalators.

Also, in a small side room, a car’s reverse camera films the visitors in the central exhibition room, thus turning them into a part of the art exhibit. This apart, the sculpted drawings — made with a delicate magnetic structure in the exhibition room, along with the distance and coldness of the video artworks — make for a beautiful blend of installation and video art.
