Gujarat elections highlights: 68.70% voting in second phase, drama outside EC office

The Election commission says 68.70% voting has been recorded in final phase of Gujarat elections that saw 851 candidates contesting for the 93 assembly seats. Here are the highlights.

The second and final phase of Gujarat elections saw 68.07% turnout on Thursday, with polling held in 93 assembly constituencies across 14 districts in northern and central region of the state. 

BJP president Amit Shah, finance minister Arun Jaitley, and Patidar leader Hardik Patel were among the political heavyweights who voted on Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mother Heeraben also cast her vote in Gandhinagar.               

About 851 candidates are contesting in Banaskantha, Patan, Sabarkantha, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Aravalli, Mahisagar, Panchmahal, Dahod, Kheda, Anand, Vadodara and Chhota Udepur districts.

Counting of votes will be held on December 18.

PM launching submarine not under model code

Election Commission says one matter about PM Modi attending the launch of submarine came up. It is not under the MCC jurisdiction and no permission was also sought from the Commission.

The EC says the BJP delegation came to office today and kept some points related to allegations made by Congress. The Commission will consider and after due diligence take a decision, it says.

EC receives 44 model code violation complaints

Gujarat chief electoral officer BB Swain says it received 44 complaints of violation of the model code of conduct on Thursday.
"The complaint by the Congress was filed at 11.51 a.m. before Prime Minister Modi even reached the polling booth. The complaint was filed that as a huge gathering was there at the venue, there was a possibility of a road show being held when Modi arrives. We have ordered the Model Code of Conduct team to look into the matter and the Ahmedabad collector will be reporting to us on it," he said.
