The Moon is about to put on a dramatic show. A recent BBC Weather Instagram Reel invited moon-gazers to look up as August's Full Moon arrives alongside a partial lunar eclipse. The BBC Weather post says that the Moon could take on a striking red colour, with the eclipse visible across parts of the Americas, Africa and Europe.

For astrology followers, there is another reason to pay attention. The eclipse arrives with the Full Sturgeon Moon, bringing together a striking sky event and a lunar moment that astrologers often associate with emotional shifts, endings and reflection.

Why does the Sturgeon Moon look red?

You may have heard the term "Blood Moon" used for a lunar eclipse. It sounds dramatic, but the reason is entirely natural.

As Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, its shadow falls across the lunar surface. The red or orange glow comes from sunlight passing through Earth's atmosphere before reaching the Moon. The atmosphere scatters more of the blue light, allowing more red and orange light to reach the lunar surface.

The name has nothing to do with the Moon turning red.

The Old Farmer's Almanac says August's Full Moon is traditionally called the Sturgeon Moon because lake sturgeon were once particularly plentiful and easier to catch in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain around this time of year. The name belongs to a long tradition of giving Full Moons seasonal names.

In 2026, the Full Sturgeon Moon reaches peak illumination on August 28 at 12:18 a.m. ET.

What does the lunar eclipse mean in astrology?

The August lunar eclipse occurs in Pisces, with the Moon around the early degrees of the sign. In astrology, Pisces is associated with intuition, emotions, imagination, spirituality and surrender. The opposite Virgo energy brings attention to routines, work, practical responsibilities and the small details of everyday life.

So, if you follow astrology, you may find yourself thinking about the balance between the two.

Astrologers often view lunar eclipses as periods when emotions or situations that have been developing beneath the surface become harder to ignore.

A Full Moon moment to slow down

You do not have to treat the eclipse as a prediction of something dramatic.

You can simply use it as a symbolic pause. A Pisces lunar eclipse can be a good moment, astrologically speaking, to reflect on what you have outgrown, where you need stronger boundaries and what you are ready to release.

The Virgo-Pisces axis also gives this eclipse a very human theme, finding a balance between your inner world and your everyday life.
