Did you know a film on Pappi from Tanu Weds Manu was on the cards?
Deepak Dobriyal’s hilarious portrayal of desperate-to-get married Pappi in Tanu Weds Manu and its sequel in 2015 won him a lot of praise. The actor, however, says that he is fed up of the character.
He says, “I will never do this role again. I can do a sequel, but not the third part, ever. It’s because you start getting over-confident that ‘yeh toh maine kiya hua hai’, and then you aren’t able to explore anything else. You get stuck to it.”
In the West, some characters from multi-starrer films that connect with the audience often get their own stand-alone films. In India, however, this trend is yet to be explored. Since Pappi is a popular character, were there any talks about making a separate film with him in the lead? “Yes, there were talks and discussions that we should explore something new. People might have said at some point that I should continue playing this character if there is a third part, but teen baar se shaadi hi nahi ho rahi hai! Kya ek hi shaadi hai duniya mein? I said I won’t be able to do the same role again, let the makers cast someone else,” says Deepak, who is currently shooting for Kaptaan with Saif Ali Khan.
He emphasises on the need to take up different roles, saying, “I reject monotonous roles. There have been times when I have taken up a film only for money. But working in them was creatively satisfying too, and the makers gave respect too, like Sooraj [Barjatya] ji [for Prem Ratan Dhan Payo; 2015]... paisa bhi theek tha aur role bhi.”
