The 21-year-old man who tried to kill himself minutes after stabbing a 19-year-old student to death at a private college in Bengaluru is out of danger and recovering well, the police said on Wednesday.

The assailant, Pawan Kalyan (21), stabbed himself in the chest after attacking Layasmitha (19). While the girl died on the spot, he was in critical condition.
“He is recovering well and is almost out of danger,” Bengaluru rural superintendent of police (SP), Mallikarjun Baldandi, said on Wednesday. The accused was shifted to Bowring hospital in Bengaluru for treatment, the police said.
Layasmitha, a native of Kolar, was pursuing BTech at Presidency University. The accused, also a native of Kolar, is a first-year BCA student at Nrupathunga University in Bengaluru, police said.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 1 pm on Monday inside the Presidency University, a private institution in Bengaluru located under the Rajanukunte police limits. Pawan sneaked into the college and waited for about 40 minutes at the campus.
“A lot of people travel via the shuttle bus every day. There was a lot of movement at the gate, and he entered the college with other people. He did not get any fake ID card to enter the college,” the Bengaluru rural SP said.
Later, he went near Layasmitha’s classroom, asked her to step out and spoke with her for 15 minutes. Layasmitha went into her classroom to get her bag, and when she returned, Pawan stabbed her in the chest outside the classroom.
Layasmitha was severely injured after being stabbed multiple times and died on the spot. After attacking the girl, he stabbed himself in the stomach and chest, police said.
The college staff rushed him to a nearby hospital while the victim’s body was taken to Yelahanka Government Hospital for post-mortem.
According to the police, Pawan had proposed to Layasmitha, and she had refused his proposal. She had also blocked his contact number. During the investigation, it was found that there was no phone call or talk between Pawan and Layasmitha two days before the incident, police said.
On Monday, the victim’s mother told reporters that the boy used to call her frequently, and recently when he had replaced his display photo on WhatsApp with Layasmita’s photo, she contacted her mother.
“She had told me about this as well, and she had blocked him as well. My girl didn’t have any feelings for him. My daughter used to call me every day after college and when she reached the hostel. The question is what was the college principal and security at the hostel doing when someone attacked my daughter like this?” the mother had said.
The Rajanakunte police have registered a case of murder and attempt to suicide under sections under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Meanwhile, The police said the victim’s family has alleged negligence on part of the college management since he entered the college campus and killed her. “Those responsible will be ascertained and booked under suitable sections,” the Bengaluru rural SP said.
The management of Presidency University was not available to comment on the incident.
