Watch : Elephants take an evening walk in Mysuru ahead of Dasara celebrations

This year, the Dasara celebrations will be held from September 26 to October 5 in Mysuru.

The Dasara festival is all set to begin in Mysuru and the city is gearing up for the grand celebrations. The elephant show - which is also known as Gajapayana - has always been the highlight of the city's Dasara festival, and elephants have already arrived in the city.

The herd is led by an elephant named Abhimanyu and he will also carry the golden howdah on Vijayadashami.

A video has now gone viral on social media in which elephants and their mahouts are seen walking through parts of the city.

Around 10 elephants were spotted on the roads of Mysuru on Tuesday evening. Each was assisted by two mahouts, and people on the roads were alerted through megaphones.

A few weeks ago elephants arrived in batches from Veeranahosahalli. The herd is led by an elephant named Abhimanyu and he will also carry the golden howdah on Vijayadashami.

The tradition of Gajapayana is believed to have started in 1610 AD at Srirangapatna, a temple town located around 20 km from Mysuru. This year, the Dasara celebrations will be held from September 26 to October 5, and Abhimanyu will also lead the herd during 'Jumbo Savari' on Vijayadashami.
