“Amit Singh Rana, 32, who was currently posted in Srinagar, had come on leave to his native village Laharu. He was returning home after meeting his friend when his car plunged into a gorge in the Khundian area of Jawalamukhi on Monday night,” said Dehra superintendent of police Mayank Chaudhary.

“It seems that while negotiating a steep turn, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it fell into the gorge around 11 pm,” said the SP, adding that rescuers rushed Rana to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.

His last rites were performed with full military honours at his ancestral village, the SP added. Rana is survived by his parents, wife, four-year-old son, and two sisters.

Rana was awarded the Shaurya Chakra, the country’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award, in 2021 by then President Ram Nath Kovind for displaying exceptional courage and playing a vital role in neutralising eight terrorists in two back-to-back operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
