With the city gearing up for the 80th Independence Day, the district administration on Thursday held a full-dress rehearsal at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) grounds, with marching contingents, a PT show and a colourful cultural programme giving a glimpse of the main celebrations.

Deputy commissioner Himanshu Jain presided over the rehearsal and unfurled the national flag before taking the salute from the participating contingents. The march past featured men and women contingents of the Punjab Police, Punjab Home Guards and NCC cadets, among others, under the command of PPS officer Harshpreet Singh.
The ceremonial proceedings were followed by an impressive PT show, while students from various government and private educational institutions presented a patriotic cultural programme showcasing the themes of national unity, integrity and love for the country.
After the rehearsal, Jain held a meeting with officials of various departments at the stadium to take stock of preparations for the August 15 celebrations. He reviewed arrangements and directed officials to complete all pending work within the stipulated time.
Punjab finance, planning, programme implementation, taxation and excise, and transport minister Harpal Singh Cheema will preside over the district-level Independence Day function at PAU on August 15, the DC said. Jain directed officials to ensure adequate arrangements for visitors, participants and guests, particularly in terms of coordination and public convenience.
