Gurgaon: New women police station in Manesar gets station head

A Gurgaon police officer said directions have been issued for setting up the south district women police station at the earliest.

Inspector Poonam Singh been appointed the first SHO of the new women police station coming up in Manesar. This is the second women police station in the city and it will cater to areas in the south police district. Gurgaon police plans to add another such station in the west district to cover the area between Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and the Dwarka Expressway.

A Gurgaon police officer said directions have been issued for setting up the south district women police station at the earliest. “The SHO has been appointed and the process of setting up the physical infrastructure will be initiated within a week. It will have jurisdiction in Manesar, Kherki Daula, Farrukhnagar, Badshahpur and other areas in south district”, said Ravinder Kumar, public relations officer, Gurgaon police.

These establishments are expected to curb the rising crime against women in the city. As per the latest data, there has been a steady rise in crime against women with cases of rapes and molestation being regularly reported across the city. Till the end of September, the number of rape cases registered by the Gurgaon police was 101, whereas cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act were 104. The number of molestation cases registered by the police was 243 while the number of cases registered under Section 498A/406 IPC was 223.

Setting up of two new women police stations was announced by state DGP BS Sandhu during his visit to Gurgaon. This has been done to ensure that crimes against women, which are rising in the city, are curbed and also to make it easier to lodge complaints across the city.

Inspector Poonam Singh, who has been given the charge of SHO, told Hindustan Times that her first objective would be to ensure that complaints lodged by women are registered at the earliest and there is no delay in filing an FIR.

“The biggest problem that women had faced earlier was lodging a complaint and travelling a long distance to reach the Sector 51 station. Now, women in Manesar and surrounding areas in south district have help at hand,” she said.
