The deceased were identified as head constable Anil Kumar, 44, of Rewari, and special police officer Chote Lal, 42, of Mahendergarh, police said. Constable Dharmender Kumar, 42, of Charkhi Dadri, who was driving the ERV, sustained critical injuries, they added.

Police officials said the three were part of a patrol team stationed in Khera Khurrampur. They received an alert from the police control room about a brawl in Farrukhnagar and left for the spot between 11pm and 11.10pm. They had travelled barely a kilometre when the crash occurred on a narrow road.

A senior police officer said the tractor had crossed the ERV, but “somehow the tanker got loose after getting unhooked and came in front of the ERV.” “The ERV driver virtually had no time to react and ended up ramming the tanker, which overturned on the road,” the officer said.

Police said the injured were taken to a nearby private hospital, where Anil Kumar and Chote Lal were declared dead. Dharmender Kumar was referred to a private hospital in Sector 38 because of his critical condition.

Sandeep Turan, public relations officer of Gurugram police, said the tractor driver fled after the collision. “The tractor, tanker and the wrecked ERV were seized from the spot. Raids were on to nab the driver,” he said.

On the complaint of Ram Kishan, brother of the injured constable, Farrukhnagar police registered an FIR against the tractor driver under sections 106, 281, 128(a) and 125(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
