Snake bites Class 1 student in Kolkata; search ordered: Forest dept

Student’s parents, along with the police and forest department officials, were informed about the incident

A Class 1 student was admitted to hospital after he was bitten by a snake at a south Kolkata school on Monday morning,

The incident took place around 8.40am.

The school headmaster Raja Dey said some of the student’s classmates alerted teachers about the incident. “The teacher-in-charge of the morning section wasted no time and rushed him to the SSKM hospital (less than two kilometres away). He was admitted. The doctors said it was a venomous snake, and he was given anti-venom. He is doing fine now,” said Raja Dey added.

Student’s parents, along with the police and forest department officials, were informed about the incident.

Forest officials tried to look for the snake but did not find any.

Dey said the forest department would carry out a thorough search of the premises.

The school, Mitra Institution is located in Bhabanipur, South Kolkata.

Dey said this was the first time that a snake bite had been reported in the school.

This is the second such incident in the city in the last week.

On August 18, a Class 3 student was bitten by a snake in a private English medium school in East Kolkata. She was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata. The child was discharged a day later.
