A sudden software update on his cell phone turned into a costly cyber scare for a Sarojini nagar resident, who alleged that ₹18,000 was siphoned from his bank account through a payment app installed on his device shortly afterwards.
The incident happened two months back, however, an FIR was registered on August 23 under Section 66d of the IT Act, 2008, said Rajdeo Ram Prajapati, SHO. Pankaj Sharma, a resident of Badali Kheda on Kanpur Road, told police in his complaint that he was speaking on his android phone at his home around 11.08 am on May 8 when the device suddenly began a software update.
What happened?
Sharma said he did not immediately suspect anything unusual. However, shortly afterwards, he received an SMS alert stating that ₹18,000 had been debited from his bank account.

On checking the transaction, he found that the money had been withdrawn through the payment app. Suspecting that his phone may have been compromised, Sharma reported the transaction on the cybercrime helpline, 1930. He subsequently approached Sarojini Nagar police and lodged a formal complaint.

Police registered a case and are investigating the alleged cyber fraud with the help of the cyber cell. Investigators are working to trace the digital trail through which the money was transferred and identify those behind the transaction.

Police also initiated the process of placing a hold on the amount and recovering it for the victim, officials said.
