One dead after fire in Mumbai hospital building, four policemen injured | VIDEO

A fire broke out in a building near Parakh hospital in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area on Saturday afternoon.

Four of 11 people injured in a fire in a building in Mumbai's Ghatkopar - a building that held a pizza restaurant (where the blaze broke out) and a hospital - were policemen. One person - 46-year-old Qurshi Dedhia - died in the tragic accident and 22 patients from the Parakh Hospital, including one who was in an operation theatre, were shifted to a nearby facility.

Policemen who assisted in evacuations and those affected by the smoke are being treated and provided oxygen at the nearby Rajawadi Hospital. The additional commissioner of the city's civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, said two were severely hurt.

Visuals circulating online show a large fire burning at the end of a narrow road between two buildings located on a main street; the building on the right, a six-floor structure, has the 'Parakh Hospital' signboard pasted in front and there seem to be more offices in the building.

Another video zooms into the blaze - which by now is a fierce conflagration sending plumes of smoke into the air. The fire was in Ghatkopar (east) and since there is no fire station in the area, help had to be sent from Chembur and Vikhroli, causing a delay of nearly 30 minutes.

Some patients are seeking refuge in the lobby of the building opposite the hospital. Jethalal Lala, one of those looking for a safe haven, said, "I was very scared as the hospital was full of smoke. I walked down with support... don't where I will go now."

The fire broke out in the electricity room of the Juno pizza restauarant in the ground floor of the building. The blaze began at around 2 am and has now been doused, officials said.

Meanwhile, a second fire was reported by news agency ANI shortly afterwards - this time at an air filter manufacturer in the Bhima Koregaon area of Pune. Six fire tenders have been deployed, the Pune Fire Department said.
