A UP Police sub-inspector and a home guard were killed, while six others were injured in two separate accidents on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) and National Highway-9 (NH-9) in Ghaziabad that took place late Wednesday and early Thursday, senior officers said.

The second accident, which took place around 5am on Thursday on the DME near Lal Kuan, involved a Swift carrying six people, including a police party. The car, travelling on the Ghaziabad-Meerut carriageway, collided with a tanker truck, injuring all six occupants.

“Upon receiving information from locals, a police team rushed to the spot and took the injured to a hospital for treatment. One of the injured persons, sub-inspector Upendra Kumar, 59, died during treatment while the others are receiving treatment,” Upasana Pandey, assistant commissioner of police, Kotwali, told HT.

“The police team was from Aligarh district and it had gone to Delhi for recovery in a case. One person recovered during the case investigation and his father were among the six passengers in the car, and they also suffered injuries,” Pandey said.

“The police team was in a rented car, and they went to Delhi to recover Ashu in connection with a case. Ashu’s father was also with us in the car. So far, no complaint has been given to the police, and it is expected that the deceased’s family will arrive in Ghaziabad on Friday,” Sachin Kumar, SHO Kotwali, told HT.

“The car and the truck had a head-on collision, and it is likely that the car driver was taking a U-turn on the DME to drive towards Aligarh. This possibly led to the head-on collision. The police are scanning CCTV footage to get the exact sequence leading to the crash,” the ACP added.

HT tried to contact police in Aligarh, but there was no response despite repeated calls.

The earlier accident, around 11.15pm on Wednesday, involved a rashly driven Thar SUV hitting a police patrolling motorcycle on NH-9 near Crossings Republik, killing a home guard and injuring a constable, police said.

“The police response vehicle (the motorcycle) was of Noida police, and they were headed to Gaur City 2 area via NH-9. The bike was hit by a speeding and rashly driven Thar SUV. Police rushed both injured to a hospital where the home guard, identified as Kapil Kumar, 40, died during treatment. The injured constable, Praveen Kumar, 36, is stable. An FIR was registered at the Crossings Republik police station. The 34-year-old SUV driver was arrested and his vehicle seized,” Priyashri Pal, assistant commissioner of police, Wave City, told HT.

Police said based on a complaint by the injured constable, an FIR under BNS sections 281 (rash driving), 106 (death by a rash or negligent act) and 324(4) (causing damage) was registered against the suspect driver.

The officials said the suspect driver is a resident of Gandhi Nagar in Ghaziabad and runs a clothing business.
