The long-pending proposal to build a super speciality hospital for BJ Medical College (BJMC) and Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) has gained momentum following the intervention of the state medical education minister, with the district administration expected to hand over 15-20 acres of land by August 20, officials said on Friday.
The expansion is expected to significantly strengthen one of the state’s largest government healthcare institutions. BJMC and Sassoon General Hospital together have around 1,700 beds and 140 ICU beds across specialised units, including the NICU, MICU, Trauma ICU, PICU and SICU. The hospital caters to 2,500-3,000 outpatients daily and performs nearly 500 minor and major procedures every day. It has 25 speciality departments spread across nearly 100 buildings.
Dr Eknath Pawar, dean of BJMC, said, “The district administration has taken a positive approach. The required land will be identified after a detailed survey and removal of encroachments wherever necessary. Once the technical process is completed, the land will be transferred so that the project can move forward without further delay.”

Before the transfer, officials will carry out a land survey, complete measurements and remove encroachments from portions of the identified plot. Sources said possession of the land is likely to be handed over to BJMC by August 20, enabling the project to move to the next stage.
The proposal had remained in limbo for months. The medical education department had asked BJMC on January 10, 2025, to submit a proposal for a super speciality hospital. The college submitted its proposal six days later, but it remained pending until the medical education minister recently directed officials to expedite the process.
According to officials, the project will include a 400-bed super speciality hospital and a postgraduate institute, with a dedicated cancer care facility also under consideration. The expansion is intended to address the growing demand for advanced tertiary healthcare services in western Maharashtra.
