All in the family: Shivnarine Chanderpaul, son hit fifties in same first-class tie

Shivnarine Chanderpaul and his son Tagenarine Chanderpaul became the first father-son duo to score fifties in the same first-class match.

Twenty two years separated Walter Hadlee’s last Test and his son, former Kiwi great, Sir Richard Hadlee’s first. Closer home, 10 years separated Sunil Gavaskar’s last first- class game and son Rohan’s first.

Such big gaps are the norm and the father and son generally don’t play competitive cricket together.

However, retired West Indies batting great Shivnarine Chanderpaul and son Tagenarine Chanderpaul scored fifties in the same first-class match on Sunday.

Batting for Guyana in the regional four-day tournament at Sabina Park, Jamaica, the two shone as their team scored 262 in first innings against Jamaica’s 255.

They have played together for Guyana earlier too.

Tagenarine, 20, opened the innings while Shivnarine, 42, came in third drop. The two added 38 runs for the fourth wicket in 12.2 overs.

Interestingly, there is more to Tagernarine that reminds him of his father than his batting left-handed --- like Shivnarine,

he also hammers the bail into the ground to mark his guard.

Shivnarine is West Indies’ second most prolific Test batsmen, scoring 11,867 runs in 164 Tests. He is only behind Brian Lara.
