The Indian cricket board is set to launch its media rights tender for bilateral cricket (2023-28) to complete the circle of its leading revenue streams.

“The tender will be coming out soon. We’re planning to close the media rights process by August end,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said on Wednesday.

After big gains from IPL media rights ( 48,390 crore -- 2023-27) and securing a 38.5% share (nearly $1bn) from ICC’s media rights revenue (2023-27), the BCCI bilateral cricket rights tender will hit the market. The broadcaster’s response to these rights will determine the immediate future of bilateral cricket, amid the growing T20 franchise calendar.

It’s not clear if BCCI plans to continue with another round of e-auction. Market sources say that with the bilateral cricket space on the decline, BCCI is open to the option of going back to closed bidding for true extraction of value.

In 2018, Disney Star won the BCCI rights (2018-23) for 6,138.1 crore, nearly doubling BCCI’s income from bilateral cricket at the time.

3 Ind-Aus ODIs before WC

India and Australia would have known enough of each other before facing off in their opening ODI World Cup fixture in Chennai on October 8. It’s now confirmed that a three-match India-Australia ODI series will be held in the narrow window between the Asia Cup, which ends on September 17, and the ODI World Cup warm-ups. This series will also mark the start of India’s new bilateral media rights cycle.

Five Cos keen on jersey deal

The Indian team in the West Indies is expected to have a jersey sponsor with the tendering process for BCCI lead (jersey) sponsorship to be completed in the next few days. Five companies are known to have expressed interest in response to the BCCI tender, which was available for purchase till June 26.

BCCI has kept the base price modest at 3 crore per bilateral match and 1 crore per ICC/ACC match, collectively estimated to be 40% lower than the current value. India will play a total of 240 matches in the next five years.
