IPL 2024
The 2024 season of Indian Premier League is all set to kick off on March 22 where defending champions Chennai Super Kings will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore at Chepauk Stadium. Another thrilling start to another season is expected as two of the biggest superstars in Indian cricket – MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli – will be up against each other in the opener.
The upcoming edition of the IPL will witness two former champions playing under new captains, with Hardik Pandya's homecoming to Mumbai Indians and Shubman Gill's promotion as Gujarat Titans skipper. The dynamics at both franchises will be interesting to watch as India captain Rohit Sharma will play under Hardik's leadership, while rising star Gill will be leading an IPL team for the first time.
Meanwhile, teams like Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants will be desperate to win their maiden title this season after years of failed attempts.
All 10 franchises strengthened their squad at the IPL 2024 auction where the Aussie pace duo Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins scripted history with record bids. Starc became the most expensive player in the league history as Kolkata Knight Riders acquired his services for INR 24.75 crore. While his skipper Cummings joined Sunrisers Hyderabad for a whopping INR 20.5 crore. Harshal Patel turned out to be the most expensive Indian player as Punjab Kings signed him for INR 11.75 crore, followed by uncapped Sameer Rizvi who fetched a massive INR 8.4 crore from defending champions Chennai Super Kings.
The BCCI has announced the schedule of IPL 2024 for the first two weeks as it will commence from March 22, 2024. The Indian cricket governing body is awaiting the dates for the 18th Lok Sabha elections, after which it will work in tandem with local authorities to finalize the schedule for the remainder of the season, taking into account the polling dates. The BCCI will work closely with government and security agencies and will follow all necessary protocols and advisories related to the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections in India.
During the two weeks, 21 matches will be played across 10 cities, with each team playing a minimum of three matches and a maximum of five. Delhi Capitals will play their IPL matches in the first leg at Visakhapatnam.
