MI Squad IPL 2025

Take a look at the behemoth of a squad Mumbai Indians were able to inherit from their last IPL cycle, and you wonder how they had a record of 17 wins and 27 losses, including two seasons where they finished rock bottom with 4 wins and 10 losses. Look at the names of the players they have kept on for the 2025 season, and you have to wonder how this team has had such a mediocre run of it since their final.

Rohit Sharma stays on as their star opener despite some murmurings of the team moving on. Suryakumar Yadav is one of the best performers in T20 cricket over the last 5 years, but he has had something of a barren patch recently. Tilak Varma is one of the brightest young stars of Indian cricket, but is just 22 years old. Hardik Pandya has hopped away from MI and then back, gaining captaincy in a controversial fashion. Jasprit Bumrah is the shining jewel of Indian cricket, but his workload means he might miss matches early in this tournament.

That is a real murderer’s row of elite Indian talent, and one that any team would bite your hand off to have access to. But for some reason, the results and performances haven’t matched the stature of the names on this list. Mumbai Indians desperately need it to all come together, otherwise questions might be asked, and a reset that sees the Wankhede Stadium lose its stars.

Of course, this is far too early to be so doom-and-gloom about a team that knows what it takes to win, with 5 IPL titles under their belt. This is a team that is aware they have a formidable domestic core, and know how that simplifies their approach in the auction: go after overseas talent to complement the pieces that are already in place.

This meant an ability to go after a top-quality overseas seamer, bringing Trent Boult back to a team where he has tasted success. Will Jacks’ success in the back end of last IPL saw him earn a move as well, set to open alongside Rohit, while Ryan Rickelton and Mitchell Santner fill in the gap for the need for a wicketkeeper and a spinner, with the latter being a major concern in this previous cycle that went a long way towards explaining their struggles.

The importance of Mumbai’s depth buys will come to the fore, however, with Allah Ghazanfar and Bumrah both missing significant portions of the tournament. Will Reece Topley have to play, necessitating Karn Sharma stepping in? Will Mujeeb Ur Rahman provide adequate cover? And beyond, will they be able to find a slot for Rickelton, and if not, will wicketkeeper Robin Minz be able to have an impact if he is slotted into the middle order?

It’s all a little complicated for Mumbai, but at the same time, you look at the quality of batters they possess, and it’s hard to imagine that they can’t go on a big run if even just two or three find their best form. Once that happens and they enter the playoffs, it would take a brave person to bet against them.
