Kolkata Knight Riders vs Punjab Kings Commentary

5:45 PM IST Goodbye for now - That brings us to the end of a rain-hit evening at Eden Gardens, where the game has been washed out. Punjab Kings remain unbeaten, while Kolkata Knight Riders finally get on the board this season. The action in Indian Premier League 2026 now moves to Barsapara Cricket Stadium, where Rajasthan Royals will take on Mumbai Indians on Tuesday, April 7th, starting at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), and as always, you can join us early for all the build-up. Until then, take care and goodbye!
5:36 PM IST MATCH ABANDONED - The official confirmation is in from Eden Gardens - the game has been CALLED OFF after persistent rain refused to relent, with conditions never improving enough for play to resume. This marks the second consecutive game between these teams at this venue to be abandoned due to rain. We only managed 3.4 overs of action on what turned out to be a frustrating evening. Kolkata Knight Riders, rather surprisingly, chose to bat first in these conditions but were quickly put under pressure by Punjab Kings, who had reduced them to 25/2, with Xavier Bartlett picking both, before the rain took over. Punjab will feel this one slipped away, with early momentum on their side and a third consecutive win looking likely before the weather intervened. Kolkata, meanwhile, will quietly take the result, as it would have taken a big effort to recover from that start, and they at least managed to get off the mark this season, albeit with some help from the rain.
5:32 PM IST UPDATE - 11.01 pm IST (5.31 pm GMT) - There's been a lengthy discussion in the middle at Eden Gardens, with the umpires in conversation with both captains, Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer, and with handshakes now done, it effectively confirms that the match has been abandoned.
5:30 PM IST UPDATE - 10.57 pm IST (5.27 pm GMT) - All the covers have now been removed at Eden Gardens, with the Super Soppers also in action, but a concern remains. A fair bit of water had collected on the sheets, and while the ground staff tried to peel them off carefully, some of it had seeped into an area near the boundary line. That patch is now under focus, and with player safety a priority, especially this early in the season, it could weigh heavily on the final decision.
5:29 PM IST UPDATE - 10.44 pm IST (5.14 pm GMT) - The umpires are out in the middle now, with some of the covers also starting to come off as inspections get underway. Sourav Ganguly, the president of CAB, is out there as well, in discussion with the head pitch curator, closely assessing the situation. While the umpires are carefully checking the outfield, where a few droplets are still visible on the grass, there also appears to be a fair bit of water collected near the sidelines. With time running out for the ground staff to get things match-ready, the window for a restart is beginning to narrow.
5:09 PM IST Game stopped due to : Wet Ground Condition
