Early in the game, RCB had the first call go their way as they opted to bowl. Wickets of the openers were always going to be key against a GT team which is dependent on runs from the top order – and that’s exactly what Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar provided, removing Gill and Sudharsan respectively to swing the needle in RCB’s favour early. RCB’s bowling leader on the night was Rasikh Salam Dar – perhaps the least-touted of the star RCB pace unit, but one who has come into his own this year. On the night in Ahmedabad, he took three wickets, but the majority of the RCB bowling chipped in to ensure that GT always looked well short of any competitive total. (PTI)

GT needed their own new ball attack to provide quick wickets, but quite the opposite happened. Venkatesh Iyer and Virat Kohli bit into the new ball, hammering runs at will and finding boundaries all across the pitch. There was a small hiccup as Rashid Khan brought some life to GT’s defence with the wickets of Rajat Patidar and Krunal Pandya in the same over. RCB were slightly vulnerable at that moment – but with the required rate under 6, restructuring was never something to be too concerned about. (PTI)

End of the day, it was all about Virat Kohli. Starring for the franchise he has called his home, Kohli struck his fastest-ever IPL fifty, taking only 25 deliveries. Ultimately, he finished on 75*, with three sixes to his name – one of them over long-on to wrap it up, the chasemaster doing what he has done so well for so many years.
