Celebrities, politicians, business houses and educational institutions are among a total of 46 aspirants vying to own teams in the Karnataka Premier League (KPL), to be held between September 12 and 27.
Karnataka State Cricket Association President (KSCA) Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar declined to divulge details, but confirmed that the actor-turned-politician M H Ambareesh was among the bidders for a team in the state level Twenty20 tournament involving eight zonal teams on the lines of the Indian Premier League.
The bids for eight franchises would be opened on August 3. KSCA has fixed Rs 20 lakh as the minimum bid.
The association kicked off a three-day seminar today for the hopefuls, providing details about the tournament, bidding process and related information.
KSCA would form a group of 40 prominent cricketers in Karnataka and the franchises would have to pick a minimum of five from this group. The player auction would be held on August 8.
