I thought he was going to say the four-letter word starting with ‘b’ again. Would have batted first as well. Good grass covering, nice and even, probably the best pitch of the series. Good thing about it is that it’s hard so you can get something out of it with the new ball. We have an unchanged XI. First time in a long time. Rightly so as well. Don’t think we need to change looking at the conditions. We have all bases covered. Ashwin is ready to go as well. He was 70% in the last game. Him fit and ready is a boost for us with so many left-handers in their side. We’ve all gained so much experience, we’ve played four years of Test cricket from the last time. We understand how to react in tough situations. Guys are waiting for opportunities rather than being unaware of them. Last time we couldn’t capitalize on important moments. Key is working even harder than Nottingham and putting a good performance again.

The grass is even. Looks like a proper Test match pitch. The team batting first will have to counter the movement in the first hour or so because there is a bit of live grass,” he said.

Virat Kohli has urged his batsmen to keep an open mind on a pitch expected to afford slow bounce to seamers. “I don’t feel like any need to change, or for any batsmen from how they played in the last game. But we don’t want to be rigid; if the wicket is going to behave differently, you want to be flexible and not go out there with pre-conceived notions,” he said.

India skipper Virat Kohli ruled out playing an all-pace attack and felt spinners will play a role at the Ageas Bowl. “If the pitch is like it was in Johannesburg, we will have no doubts about playing an all-pace attack,” he said, referring to the third Test in January, which India won on an uneven pitch. “I don’t think this pitch is anywhere close to that. I doubt an all-pace attack is the right option. It doesn’t make much sense because the last time we played here, spinners came into play in the second innings. The surface is pretty hard and once it wears out, there can be big footmarks and the spinners can get a lot. That is how I see it right now.”

India may retain the same playing eleven for the first time after 38 Tests under Virat Kohli with the India skipper declaring R Ashwin fit to play in the fourth Test against England starting at the Ageas Bowl on Thursday. “We don’t feel we need to change anything,” Kohli, who will be leading India in his 39th Test, told a media conference on Wednesday. With India openers Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul making vital contributions to the 203-run win at Trent Bridge, the possibility of changes had receded. Off-spinner Ashwin suffered an adductor muscle problem, but Kohli said: “Everyone is fit to start tomorrow. Ashwin has recovered nicely. He had a good practice session yesterday and he is good to go. It has not always been the case of changes. There have been injuries as well, which has not been taken into consideration. It has been a mix. Seeing things the way they are right now, we don’t see any need to change anything.”

India have tried three different opening pairs in three Tests and while England have stuck with the same pair, the numbers produced by them aren’t painting a rosy picture. Alastair Cook is going through one of the worst phases of his illustrious career and Keaton Jennings is fighting hard for survival at the highest level. Both have looked unconvincing. India’s latest opening pair of Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul has ignited hope of solving the opening riddle but it’s still far from a perfect solution. Dhawan has fought hard and Rahul has shown glimpses of his potential but both of them are yet to score individual fifties.

But for that, the team management needs to take some tough decisions and put pressure on the home side. “Absolutely, they can win the series. Every Test has seen a result and it should be the same. This is a big opportunity for India to make a comeback and take the series. But for that, they have to put pressure on the English team. I felt that batting first in the third Test was a blessing in disguise as the Indians seemed keen to bat second in both the first two games. You have to bat first, put up runs on the board and put pressure on the English batsmen. They are not in the best form at the moment and the Indians should look to exploit that,” he pointed.

If momentum is a real thing in sport, India should start the third Test as favourites. But if momentum could sway the eventual outcome, England had no business of losing the third Test. By now, it’s become quite apparent that both teams have their weaknesses and the team that’s able to hide them better is the one ending up on the right side of the result.
