20:45 hrs IST
India looking for a wicket
With Moeen Ali and Sam Curran looking more and more dangerous with every passing over, Virat Kohli and boys would want one wicket to break into the lower order. Six down, the English outfit is looking at these two to bat for as long as they can. DRS saves the day for Curran as he was hit on the pad, but the verdict went with the UMPIRE’s CALL.

England have done a good job with the lower middle-order showing good resistance. Sam Curran and Moeen Ali have frustrated the Indian bowlers. They will want to bat out this session and put on some runs on the board for the bowlers to defend.

Playing for tea
Moeen Ali and Sam Curran are now keen to bat till the tea break. Bumrah and Ashwin have been bowling really well here and the Indians would want one more wicket before heading to the break. Curran batting on 24 and Moeen on 20.
19:44 hrs IST
Bumrah and Ashwin in the attack
Kohli is slowly starting to look a bit frustrated here as the good balls are missing the edge and not giving the Indian bowlers the returns that they expect. Curran and Moeen must ensure that they bat till the tea break here. Ashwin is getting turn here and that is good news for the Indians here.
19:34 hrs IST
Curran looks to take attack to the bowlers
Curran is looking to take the attack to the bowlers. The Indian bowlers have kept it really tight as a result of which the English batsmen are now trying to score some quick runs. The lower-order has to give the English bowlers something to play with here.
19:24 hrs IST
100 up for England
Edgy but effective here for England as Moeen Ali edges Shami to the third-man boundary to bring up the 100 for the hosts. 101/6 reads the scoreboard. With the kind of movement on offer, India would want to end the innings as early as possible and not allow the Englishmen to score too many runs here.
19:14 hrs IST
Indian bowlers have tail up
Having picked six wickets in the first three and a half hours on the opening day, the Indian bowlers are clearly on top here. Can Sam Curran and Moeen Ali bring England back into the game? Will be a tough task considering how well the Indian bowlers have bowled here. Pitched them in the right areas and not looked to try too many things. The score reads 89/6
19:02 hrs IST
Shami traps Stokes plumb
The Indians are at the top of their game. Shami now removes Stokes, caught plumb in front. Stokes goes for 23 as the score reads 86/6. Time to finish off the tail here. It is the lower-order that will take strike now. India must look to finish things off here in this session.
19:00 hrs IST
Ishant and Shami bowling well
Ishant Sharma and Shami have been bowling a good line and length here and have troubled the England batsmen with Stokes even looking to come down the track a couple of times to tackle the swing. But the Indian bowlers have been pitching it up consistently to get the ball to move. Brilliant bowling here from the duo.
18:50 IST
Ishant warned for stepping into danger zone
With Moeen and Stokes at the crease, Ishant has been bowling round the wicket and he has stepped onto the danger zone quite a few times. The umpire finally hands him the first warning and Kohli might want to bowl him from the other end here as sometimes it get difficult to change the landing spot in certain cases. The score reads 82/5.
18:42 hrs IST
Stokes and Ali look to consolidate
With the Indian bowlers bowling a testing line, Stokes and Ali are keen to hold fort and settle into a partnership here. Not taking any undue risks as the Indian pacers have been at the top of their game. Happy to leave any ball outside the off-stump and waiting for the bad deliveries.
18:32 hrs IST
Indian bowlers hold fort
This has been a clinical show from the Indian bowlers after Root won the toss and decided to have a bat first. The move has clearly backfired as the Indians have bowled a beautiful line and induced a false shot from the England batsmen time and again. This has been a quality effort from the Indian pacers. Shami has also been on the mark from the word go in this innings.
18:22 hrs IST
Shami gets Buttler
The Indians are at the top of their game. Shami removes Buttler, caught by Kohli in the slip cordon. Buttler goes for 21 as the score reads 69/5. England need a partnership here if they wish to make a match out of this one. Moeen Ali to join Stokes in the middle.
18:14 hrs IST
Shami starts proceedings post lunch
Kohli has handed the ball to Shami after the break and he has started well. Induces the edge from Buttler in the very first over, but unfortunately that goes in the gap. India are bowling well here and would ideally want to get into the English tail by the end of this session.
17:33 hrs IST
Lunch on Day 1
India have started the Test really well at the Ageas Bowl as England are four down in the opening session. Buttler and Stokes are at the crease as Bumrah stole the show with two wickets. Could well have been five wickets had Pant not dropped Buttler for 11. Shami was the unfortunate bowler. But a good show overall from the Indian bowlers with Ishant also bowling a beautiful line. Buttler is unbeaten on 13 and Stokes on 12 as the score reads 57/4.
17:26 hrs IST
Buttler dropped by Bumrah
Hard chance, but that ball did enter the glove of the keeper before Pant dropped it. Shami the unlucky bowler this time round. Buttler gets a life on 11. The last time Pant dropped Buttler he got a century. Will this be another comeback from Buttler?
17:20 hrs IST
Bumrah back in the attack
With just 10 minutes to go for the lunch interval, Kohli falls back on Bumrah and wants him to give him one more wicket, to make it complete domination for the Indians. Already 4 wickets captured in the session, it could not have gotten better for the Indians in this session. The Indians need just one more to get into the lower order.
17:10 hrs IST
Buttler looking to stay positive
With the Indian bowlers dominating the show right through the morning session, Buttler is looking to play some shots here as things get closer to the lunch break on the opening day of the fourth Test. Hits Pandya for two boundaries, one a drive and the next a flick. England need him to stay at the crease and give Stokes company.
17:01 hrs IST
Pandya sends back Cook
Kohli picks a brilliant catch as Cook has to walk back to the dressing room with just 30 minutes left for the lunch interval. Cook goes for 17 as the score reads 36/4 and England are now in deep trouble here. This is just the start India would have wanted after losing the toss.
16:52 hrs IST
Indian bowlers dominate
The Indian bowlers have been bowling a good line and both Ben Stokes and Alastair Cook have looked to play steady cricket rather than taking any undue chances. Cook needs to be there till the lunch break to ensure that all is not lost for the Englishmen. The score reads 29/3 after 15 overs.
16:42 hrs IST
Bumrah picks his second
India have started really well in the fourth Test at the Ageas Bowl as Bumrah picks his second as he now sends back Bairstow for 6. India’s score reads 28/3. Bumrah has been bowling the perfect line and length here. Bairstow literally had nothing to do as the ball held its line after pitching and took the perfect edge.
16:34 hrs IST
First hour goes to India
Brilliant start for India here as they have bowled in the right areas in the first hour and got two big wickets. Jennings and Root are back in the hut and the English batsmen have their task cut-out here. Ishant and Bumrah have been at the top of their game and have done really well. The score reads 26/2
16:25 hrs IST
Bairstow and Cook look to build partnership
With both Jennings and Root back in the hut, it is important for both Cook and Bairstow to ensure that they don’t lose another wicket here before the end of the session. They need to hold fort and build a partnership here as the Indian bowlers have looked to bowl a tight line and length.
16:15 hrs IST
Bumrah working up good rhythm
Bumrah has been the difference this series. Out with a thumb injury in the first two games, Kohli just didn’t have someone to back Ishant. But ever since making a return to the squad in the third Test, Bumrah has shown what the team was missing. Brilliant spell from the bowler. He is literally getting the ball to talk here on the first day of the Test match.
16:05 hrs IST
Ishant sends back Root
Brilliant bowling by Ishant and he finally gets his reward. That one hit the pad and Root looked plumb. The umpire raised his finger, but Root got it reviewed. The review gives him OUT as Root goes back for 4. India clearly on top here as the score reads 15/2.
16:00 hrs IST
Cook and Root look to steady ship
Bumrah and Ishant are both bowling really well and have hit the right areas. The wicket is helping the new ball bowlers. Cook and Root looking to stay steady and not take too many risks here in the first hour. Important to keep wickets in the bag here. The score reads 11/1
15:52 hrs IST
Bumrah and his tryst with no-balls
It looked almost plumb there as the ball came in and hit Root on the pads. The umpire said NOT OUT, but India immediately got it reviewed. But the first frame shows that is a no-ball. Clearly the ball was hitting middle-stump there. What a shave for the England captain on 2.
15:50 hrs IST
Ishant bowling a testing line
Virat Kohli handed the new ball to Ishant along with Bumrah and the pace spearhead has done really well so far, bowling a testing line outside the off-stump. He has had Cook look a bit circumspect outside the off, but no wickets to show so far. The score reads 3/1 after 4 overs.
15:40 hrs IST
Bumrah gets Jennings
Jennings goes for a duck as Bumrah gets the ball to hit his pad right in front of the wicket. No doubt with that one as the umpire immediately raises his finger. That makes the score 1/1 for India after 2.1 overs.
15:30 hrs IST
Bumrah starts proceedings
Virat Kohli hands the ball to India’s most impressive bowler in the Trent Bridge Test, Jasprit Bumrah. Starts really well and is bowling in the right areas to both the left-handers with Cook and Jennings both looking to avoid getting an edge as the slip cordon waits.
15:15 hrs IST
Virat Kohli at the toss
I thought he was going to say the four-letter word starting with ‘b’ again. Would have batted first as well. Good grass covering, nice and even, probably the best pitch of the series. Good thing about it is that it’s hard so you can get something out of it with the new ball. We have an unchanged XI. First time in a long time. Rightly so as well. Don’t think we need to change looking at the conditions. We have all bases covered. Ashwin is ready to go as well. He was 70% in the last game. Him fit and ready is a boost for us with so many left-handers in their side. We’ve all gained so much experience, we’ve played four years of Test cricket from the last time. We understand how to react in tough situations. Guys are waiting for opportunities rather than being unaware of them. Last time we couldn’t capitalize on important moments. Key is working even harder than Nottingham and putting a good performance again.

Joe Root wins toss
England will bat first. Root wants to take charge. Woakes is unfit and Sam Curran comes in. Moeen Ali also comes in. Bairstow to bat at no.4. Virat Kohli goes in with an unchanged squad. Kohli says a few niggles have been ignored here and there, but yes, the same XI for the first time under Kohli.

Pitch wears a green cover
The pitch looks really green and Sanjay Manjrekar feels that there should not be an issue of double bounce here as predicted before the Test. “The pitch looks flawless, nothing to suggest it will be two-paced. The grass is even. Looks like a proper Test match pitch. The team batting first will have to counter the movement in the first hour or so because there is a bit of live grass,” he said.
14:50 hrs IST
Batsmen need to be careful
Virat Kohli has urged his batsmen to keep an open mind on a pitch expected to afford slow bounce to seamers. “I don’t feel like any need to change, or for any batsmen from how they played in the last game. But we don’t want to be rigid; if the wicket is going to behave differently, you want to be flexible and not go out there with pre-conceived notions,” he said.
14:40 hrs IST
Spinners have a role to play
India skipper Virat Kohli ruled out playing an all-pace attack and felt spinners will play a role at the Ageas Bowl. “If the pitch is like it was in Johannesburg, we will have no doubts about playing an all-pace attack,” he said, referring to the third Test in January, which India won on an uneven pitch. “I don’t think this pitch is anywhere close to that. I doubt an all-pace attack is the right option. It doesn’t make much sense because the last time we played here, spinners came into play in the second innings. The surface is pretty hard and once it wears out, there can be big footmarks and the spinners can get a lot. That is how I see it right now.”

Kohli says team doesn’t need a change
India may retain the same playing eleven for the first time after 38 Tests under Virat Kohli with the India skipper declaring R Ashwin fit to play in the fourth Test against England starting at the Ageas Bowl on Thursday. “We don’t feel we need to change anything,” Kohli, who will be leading India in his 39th Test, told a media conference on Wednesday. With India openers Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul making vital contributions to the 203-run win at Trent Bridge, the possibility of changes had receded. Off-spinner Ashwin suffered an adductor muscle problem, but Kohli said: “Everyone is fit to start tomorrow. Ashwin has recovered nicely. He had a good practice session yesterday and he is good to go. It has not always been the case of changes. There have been injuries as well, which has not been taken into consideration. It has been a mix. Seeing things the way they are right now, we don’t see any need to change anything.”
14:20 hrs IST
Opening woes for both teams
Former India opener Aakash Chopra feels that there’s very little to choose between the two sides. India have tried three different opening pairs in three Tests and while England have stuck with the same pair, the numbers produced by them aren’t painting a rosy picture. Alastair Cook is going through one of the worst phases of his illustrious career and Keaton Jennings is fighting hard for survival at the highest level. Both have looked unconvincing. India’s latest opening pair of Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul has ignited hope of solving the opening riddle but it’s still far from a perfect solution. Dhawan has fought hard and Rahul has shown glimpses of his potential but both of them are yet to score individual fifties.

Sourav Ganguly feels Kohli & Co can win the series
Sourav Ganguly feels India have a good chance of making a comeback and clinching the five-game series 3-2. But for that, the team management needs to take some tough decisions and put pressure on the home side. “Absolutely, they can win the series. Every Test has seen a result and it should be the same. This is a big opportunity for India to make a comeback and take the series. But for that, they have to put pressure on the English team. I felt that batting first in the third Test was a blessing in disguise as the Indians seemed keen to bat second in both the first two games. You have to bat first, put up runs on the board and put pressure on the English batsmen. They are not in the best form at the moment and the Indians should look to exploit that,” he pointed.
13:55 hrs IST
Hello and welcome
The series was touted to be a heavyweight clash between two equally matched sides and while the opening two games presented a slightly different story, the narrative seemed to have changed radically after the third Test. Indian batting stood up at Nottingham and the result went the visitor’s way. India had issues to address but the same was true for England. There’s very little to choose between the two sides. If momentum is a real thing in sport, India should start the third Test as favourites. But if momentum could sway the eventual outcome, England had no business of losing the third Test. By now, it’s become quite apparent that both teams have their weaknesses and the team that’s able to hide them better is the one ending up on the right side of the result.
