Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has posted a cryptic tweet on Sunrisers Hyderabad releasing David Warner ahead of the mega auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League.

The SRH had retained Kane Williamson as their sole overseas player, with uncapped Indians Abdul Samad and Umran Malik making the remaining two retentions. In a major surprise, leg-spinner Rashid Khan was not retained by the franchise despite consistent performances for them throughout the years.

The side has also been criticised for their treatment of David Warner during the 2021 Indian Premier League. Warner was dropped from the side in the first phase of the edition and while he made a return to the XI at the beginning of the second leg, the opener was eventually dropped again. Moreover, Warner's social media posts throughout the second leg of the tournament suggested some differences between the player and the team management.

However, Pathan has seemingly come in support of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

"Ppl who is questioning a franchise decision about a foreign player should also remember that the same franchise supported him when his own country banned him to play!" Pathan wrote on his official Twitter profile.

The former Indian all-rounder referred to the 2018 season of the IPL, where Warner was banned from the tournament due to his role in the infamous ball-tampering scandal during a Test between Australia and South Africa.

The Sunrisers chose not to suspend Warner from the squad and welcomed him back into the side ahead of the 2019 edition of the tournament.

The left-handed opener has been one of the key figures for Sunrisers since joining the franchise in 2014. Warner led the side to its maiden IPL title in 2016, and is currently the highest run-getter for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (4,014 runs in 95 matches).
