He was well supported by Jonny Bairstow, who is unbeaten on 75* and their 174-run stand has helped England reach 305/4 at stumps on day 1. Malan and Bairstow’s efforts on a wicket that had plenty of pace and bounce for the quick bowlers is commendable after Alastair Cook, playing his 150th Test and England skipper Joe Root failed to put up the runs. Mark Stoneman played well to reach an aggressive fifty while for Australia, all their bowlers failed to maintain pressure.
