Hardik Pandya piled on the agony with a wonderful 71. Ajinkya Rahane’s side were also helped by some decent contributions from the tail-enders as India were bowled out for 474. Backed by the bowlers, in particular Ravichandran Ashwin’s haul of 4/27, India bowled Afghanistan out for 109 and enforced the follow-on. Things got only worse for Afghanistan in the second innings as Ravindra Jadeja’s 4/17 bowled them out for 103, thus resulting in a massive innings and 262-run defeat. This is India’s biggest win in terms of innings and it is the first time that India have won a Test in two days. Get highlights of India vs Afghanistan, one-off Test, Day 2, Bangalore, here. 17:55 hrs IST: That is all for the cricket here. Live sports action continues with the FIFA World Cup 2018, where Uruguay are currently taking on Egypt, minus Mo Salah.
17:54 hrs IST: Ajinkya Rahane, India skipper: This feels really special. It is always an honour to lead your country and we wanted to be ruthless. Guys like Shikhar and Vijay got those hundreds, Rahul chipped in and Pandya was magnificent at the end. It was important for all of us to stick to our basics, create some good habits, but credit to Afghanistan, they were fantastic
17:51 hrs IST: Shikhar Dhawan, Man of the Match: I am really happy with the way I have been batting. It is good that we’ve finished the match early and will have a few days off to get fresh before we go to Ireland. It was a damp pitch, the ball of course was swinging and seaming a bit but I was clear in my mind that I wanted to play positive cricket. Things went my way and I was enjoying it as by the grace of God I became the first Indian to get a century inside a session
17:48 hrs IST: Asghar Stanikzai, Afghanistan skipper: We hadn’t played a Test match before this and we’ve learnt a lot. In the future when we play a match, we know now how to play against a full member nation like India. Yes, we were surprised by how quickly things ended because we were a good team
17:37 hrs IST: Before the start of the Test, Afghanistan’s story was hailed as a triumph of the human spirit for a nation ravaged by war. However, after two days, it is with a heavy heart that one must say that at the highest level, Afghanistan did not live up to expectations. They will get chances, but in the near future, if these results continue, then it is a poor advertisement for Test cricket. The way Afghanistan lost gives you a perspective of how Ireland fared against Pakistan but they too will await sterner challenges.
17:28 hrs IST: Ashwin takes the final wicket as Wafadar decides to leave an off-break which crashes into the middle stump. India have registered their biggest win in terms of innings by securing an innings and 262 runs victory in the one-off Test. This is the first time India have secured a two-day win in a Test match. Simply sensational.
17:15 hrs IST: Jadeja takes his fourth wicket. Mujeeb falls and it is only a matter of time. The tail-ender miscues the lofted shot and Umesh Yadav takes a tumbling catch at mid on. Poor cricket from Afghanistan continues.
17:12 hrs IST: Shahidi becomes the first Afghan batsman to get to the 30s in this Test match. He has been solid in both innings but it is a tragedy that the other batsmen have lacked support.
17:02 hrs IST: The perfect yorker from Ishant and Ahmedzai’s vigil ends. India are two wickets away from completing their first two-day Test win.
16:51 hrs IST: 21 wickets have fallen in the day, which is the most for a Test on a day in India. The previous highest was 20 wickets which fell on day 3 of the India vs Australia Test in Mumbai in 2004.
16:44 hrs IST: Seems very difficult now. The flatter delivery from Jadeja slanted in on middle and off stump, Rashid Khan is cramped for room as he attempts the cut and he ends up dragging the delivery back on the stumps. The end is here.
16:42 hrs IST: Rashid Khan is showing confidence. Can Afghanistan survive for 18 minutes and take the Test into the third day? Or will play continue one hour extra in order to finish the overs?
16:31 hrs IST: The end is near for Afghanistan. Brilliant ball from Jadeja. Quick ball on middle and leg stump and it breaks away sharply, Zazai plays down the wrong line and is cleaned up.
16:23 hrs IST: The partnership has finally been broken and Jadeja gets the wicket of the Afghanistan skipper. Flighted ball on off stump, Stanikzai attempts the slog over mid wicket but miscues it and Shikhar Dhawan takes the catch running back from extra cover.
15:59 hrs IST: The partnership has now lasted for close to 10 overs between Shahidi and Stanikzai. Can these two drag the Test into the third day? Considering how day 2 has been, it will be a moral victory to take this game into the third day.
15:50 hrs IST: The fourth umpire has come out with a box of new balls. There will be a change of ball and one wonders which team will benefit with this move. Afghanistan have currently restricted the fall of wickets.
15:33 hrs IST: Stanikzai breaks the shackles with a huge six off Ashwin. Afghanistan need a lot more if they are to gain respectability.
15:19 hrs IST: Another one bites the dust. This is becoming farcical. Rahmat Shah flicks a full ball from Ishant Sharma on the pads but straight to mid wicket. Afghanistan are getting exposed on the biggest stage of the lot and this is not a good advertisement for Test cricket.
15:12 hrs IST: The downward spiral continues for Afghanistan. Full ball angled in on middle and leg stump, Mohammad Nabi falls over as he looks to work it to the leg side, gets hit on the pad but the appeal is turned down. India take the review and replays show the ball to be hitting leg stump.
15:06 hrs IST: Umesh is now on a hat-trick. Looking at the way how Afghanistan are batting, he might get it. Full ball and straightening in the zone outside off, Javed Ahmadi pokes at it and the edge is taken at second slip by Shikhar Dhawan. Two down, eight to go.
15:04 hrs IST: Shehzad is out for the second time in the day. He was run-out for 14 and he is out for 13, this time he attempts the drive and the edge is taken by the keeper. Are we heading towards a two-day finish?
14:50 hrs IST: Costly over from Umesh, nine runs from it. India will look to finish this match today itself.
14:48 hrs IST: Ishant Sharma starts with a maiden. Umesh Yadav comes into the attack.
14:22 hrs IST: Ravindra Jadeja gets Mujeeb Ur Rahman stumped after being hit for two fours and a six. Afghanistan have been bowled out for 109, trailing by 365 and India, not surprisingly, have enforced the follow-on.
14:15 hrs IST: Ashwin gets his fourth and the session will be extended. Flighted ball and Mohammad Nabi is very impatient as he miscues the slog sweep and is caught at deep mid wicket. Afghanistan are in danger of being bundled out for under 100 unless No.10 and No.11 show some aggression.
14:05 hrs IST: Ashwin gets his third and he shows his class. Flighted delivery and given a lot of air, Ahmedzai goes for the lofted shot but miscues it to backward point. Afghanistan in danger of not crossing 100.
13:55 hrs IST: Bad time to lose a wicket. Just before the team was starting to settle down. Short and wide delivery from Jadeja, Rashid Khan goes for the cut but the extra bounce results in an outside edge that is taken at backward point by Umesh Yadav. Can Afghanistan cross 100?
13:46 hrs IST: Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi are the last two recognised batsmen for Afghanistan. They will be hoping to give the team some respectability.
13:35 hrs IST: Ashwin gets his second and this time even a review is not enough to save Shahidi. This flatter delivery straightens and Shahidi is on the back foot when he plays across the line, the bat is mighty close to the delivery but there is no edge involved, Afghanistan continue to stumble.
13:29 hrs IST: Hashmatullah Shahidi was given out LBW to Ravichandran Ashwin but he immediately reviews, replays show a clear inside edge and the batsman survives. Rare that umpire Paul Reiffel makes a mistake.
13:15 hrs IST: Ravichandran Ashwin strikes in his first over. The floated off-break and it is given a lot of loop, it draws Asghar Stanikzai forward and the ball snakes past the gap to hit middle and leg. Afghanistan in dire straits.
13:02 hrs IST: Carnage in Bangalore. Ishant pitches the delivery full and it nips back in, Zazai looks to drive without much foot movement and the ball sneaks through the gap to crash into middle and leg stump.
12:56 hrs IST: Afghanistan are facing a torrid time and are in tatters. Umesh gets a length ball to straighten on middle stump, Rahmat Shah plays down the wrong line and is rapped on the pads, 100th Test wicket for the Vidarbha pacer.
12:50 hrs IST: Ishant is bowling with tremendous discipline and is getting some extra bounce and movement. If he maintains this consistency, England better watch out.
12:39 hrs IST: Brilliant ball from Ishant. On the fuller length and it nips back in off the seam, there is a slight gap between bat and pad as Rahmat Shah looks to defend, the ball sneaks past the gap and smashes middle stump.
12:33 hrs IST: Afghanistan lose their first wicket and it is courtesy a run-out. Shahzad taps this back of a length delivery from Ishant to the off side and sets off for a quick single, but Pandya swoops in from cover point and scores a direct hit at the bowler’s end. Poor start for Afghanistan with the bat.
12:25 hrs IST: Mohammad Shahzad scores the first Test runs for Afghanistan in style with two magnificent boundaries off Umesh Yadav. However, Umesh and Ishant Sharma trouble the openers with some extra pace and movement from the deck.
11:34 hrs IST: Ishant Sharma is trapped LBW by Rashid Khan and even the review cannot save him. India are all out for 474 and Afghanistan face a mighty task in the face of India’s powerful bowlers. Join us after 40 minutes after the lunch session.
11:25 hrs IST: Action packed over from Rashid Khan. He opts for the review as Ishant misses the sweep but the impact was outside off and missing off stump as well. Couple of balls later, Umesh miscues a lofted shot and Rahmat Shah takes the catch running back but is near the ropes, he throws the ball back in and prevents a six but the catch is not taken.
11:18 hrs IST: Umesh Yadav helps India go past 450 with a couple of massive sixes off Wafadar. These runs will hurt Afghanistan immensely.
11:09 hrs IST: Hardik Pandya tries the late upper-cut to a short ball from Wafadar but is cramped for room and only manages to get a glove to the keeper. Ends a wonderful knock and India might fall short of the 450 mark.
11:02 hrs IST: Mohammad Nabi finally gets a wicket. The offspinner tosses this delivery up and Jadeja dances down the track, he miscues the lofted shot and holes out to long off. Ends a good hand from Jadeja but will India declare the moment they go past 450 or will they wait for Pandya to get a 100?
10:55 hrs IST: Hardik Pandya brings up his third Test fifty with a powerful sweep off Nabo that bisects the fielders at square leg. It has been a mature knock from him and India are on course to go past 450. The fifty-run partnership between Jadeja and Pandya is also up with the right-hander smashing two boundaries and the Afghanistan fielders assisting him with five overthrows.
10:48 hrs IST: Jadeja notches up the 400 in style with a big six off Mohammad Nabi. Pandya is nearing his milestone and Afghanistan are letting this session slip. It has been more than 100 overs and Afghanistan have still not taken the second new ball.
10:38 hrs IST: India are closing in on 400 while Hardik Pandya is reaching his fifty. This has been a decent session for India and if Pandya hangs in with Jadeja, India can even think about going past 400.
10:27 hrs IST: Mohammad Nabi and Wafadar have come into the attack now. Afghanistan have still not taken the second new ball. This is rather strange. Why is Asghar Stanikzai not operating with pace at both ends, considering that Ahmedzai was in good rhythm.
10:16 hrs IST: Three consecutive fours by Hardik Pandya off Rashid Khan and India are nearing 400. This could be the time for Afghanistan to get the second new ball as the ploy to open with Rashid has not worked.
10:04 hrs IST: Edged and dropped! Ahmedzai would have gotten his fourth wicket. Full ball outside off, Ravindra Jadeja is lured into the drive and Zazai spills the chance and it goes to the third man fence. Very unlucky for Afghanistan.
10:02 hrs IST: Ahmedzai is creating chances and he is beating the outside edge of Hardik Pandya and Ravichandran Ashwin and he gets his reward. Short ball outside off, Ashwin bottom-edges the cut and the keeper Zazai takes the catch. The umpires wanted to confirm whether the catch was taken cleanly and replays confirm it. Good bowling from Ahmedzai.
09:46 hrs IST: Afghanistan have not taken the second new ball. Maybe because Rashid Khan has begun proceedings. But, one feels on a fresh day, the visitors should have taken the new ball immediately with the lower order batting.
09:34 hrs IST: Rashid Khan starts off proceedings for the day and he begins well, gets some turn and grip from this wicket. Yamin Ahmedzai, who was the pick of the bowlers yesterday, starts off in rusty fashion as he bowls a full ball on the pads which Hardik Pandya clips to the deep mid wicket fence for the first boundary of the day.
09:20 hrs IST: A warm welcome to day 2 of the one-off Test between India and Afghanistan from Bangalore. First weather update: Clear skies greet both teams. The story of day one was in two halves. India dominated one and a half sessions before Afghanistan fought back with some quick wickets.
On Day 1, Test cricket’s newest team were on the receiving end of some aggressive batting as Dhawan, who smashed 107, and Murali Vijay, who made 105, put on a 168-run opening stand after the hosts elected to bat first in Bangalore.
But the Afghan bowlers struck back with four wickets in the final session as the hosts slipped from 280-1 to 347 for six at stumps at Bangalore’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Fast bowler Yamin Ahmadzai, who gave Afghanistan their first Test scalp after getting Dhawan out early in the second session, led the attack with two wickets.
Hardik Pandya, on 10, and Ravichandran Ashwin, on 7, were at the crease when play ended after an extended final session but only 78 overs were possible due to two rain interruptions.
